Menefee Architecture collaborated with CannonDesign’s Boston office, to conduct charettes and focus groups in developing a program and Master Plan. The dining hall occupies the upper level of the student union and remained the same. The entire lower level was completely reconfigured to increase gathering and lounge spaces for study, games, and performances.

The renovation was implemented over two summers including the relocating mail, banking, and other services esewhere on campus. The design team opened up the interior by demolishing a maze of partitions and ceilings in phase 1 to connect large spaces for intuitive circulation and also transformed the interior character from traditional to modern spaces, befitting of this midcentury building. Phase 2 included updating the multipurpose Donahoo Lounge with an elevated stage, new finishes, lighting, and butt-glazed storefront along the main corridor.
