Campus Recreation Center – Athletic Therapy & Esports Renovation
About
Georgia Tech supports more than 20 intramural sports and over 45 club sports and provides fitness and recreation facilities for all on-campus students through the Campus Recreation Center (CRC). Georgia Tech has identified an opportunity to better serve the well-being of its students by establishing an athletic training and therapy center focused on preventative care, treatment, and recovery from injuries sustained during fitness or other normal daily activities. This function is not currently available on campus except for NCAA intercollegiate athletes, and students that need to utilize this service are required to arrange appointments at facilities elsewhere around the city. Likewise, Georgia Tech’s Esports program needed a gaming lounge and team room with broadcasting capabilities for both casual and completive gaming.
The Athletic Therapy & Esports Center transforms an underutilized portion of the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center into two distinct destinations. This 4,000 SF renovation enhances student health services and introduces a fast-growing opportunity for student gaming engagement within one of the institute’s most heavily utilized recreational facilities.
Previously available only to NCAA athletes, the Athletic Therapy Center expands student access to injury prevention, rehabilitation, and recovery services resources within the campus recreation environment to support the broader student population. The project renovates existing conference and dining spaces on Level 2 of the CRC, creating a dedicated athletic training and therapy center designed with specialized spaces for diagnostics and rehabilitation services including hydrotherapy. The renovation required selective demolition of existing interiors and the construction of new treatment / exam rooms, offices, support spaces, lighting systems, finishes, and upgraded MEP infrastructure tailored to the facility’s healthcare-oriented function.
Adjacent to the therapy center, a new Esports arena provides a dynamic environment for competitive gaming, casual recreation, and campus events. The Esports program includes 22 gaming stations and a console gaming lounge. The team room provides a venue for 12 Esports athletes with an adjacent broadcast room to live stream events.
The integration of wellness, rehabilitation, and emerging recreational programming creates a unique destination that supports both the physical and social well-being of the Georgia Tech community.
