In the fall of 2017, Abby Rockefeller Hall reopened with new doors and a fresh facade to incoming Spelman College Freshmen.  This four story, 1952 residence hall had never been rehabilitated.  During design, former Alumni walked through noting it was “still the same” as they had remembered it with no air conditioning.  Due to a tight budget and a summer only construction schedule, Abby Rockefeller would remain air condition-less, but at least have a modern makeover.   Spelman College, Menefee Architecture, and The Winter Construction Company collaborated on identifying the best value design decisions in order to narrow the down the scope given the three month construction schedule.  Compromises were made in restoring the exterior envelope, re-configuring the interior partitions, upgrading amenities, and existing building system.   Sustainable features include new LED lighting, low flow plumbing fixtures, and natural linoleum plank flooring.  Another sustainable effort was to make repairs rather than replace.   Hundreds of windows and trim were repaired as needed, terrazzo, tile, and pink granite toilet partitions were patched, cleaned and restored.  The team successfully transformed the dim and outdated lobby and lounge with a bright color palette and minimalist light fixtures.  The previously dark and monochromatic corridors have magnetic marker boards integrated with the door frame trim, providing opportunities for residents and guests to scribble messages,  post words of inspiration or a simple sketch.
